Drug Class Description :

Salicylates / opiates (opioids / compound analgesics).

Generic Name :

Aspirin, papaveretum

Drug description :

White dispersible tablets.

Presentation :

Tablets, aspirin 500mg, papaveretum 7.71mg (equivalent to morphine anhydrate 5mg).

Indications :

Relief of moderate to severe pain in post-operative states and chronic pain associated with inoperable carcinoma. inoperable carcinoma.

Adult Dosage :

1 or 2 dispersed in water every 4 to 6 hours; maximum 8 in 24 hours.

Child Dosage :

Not recommended.

Contra Indications :

Comatose states. Respiratory depression, obstructive airways disease, nasal polyps, aspirin/ anti-inflammatory induced allergy, history of peptic ulceration or dyspepsia, haemorrhagic disorders, diarrhoea associated with pseudomembranous colitis.

Special Precautions :

Allergic disease, anaemia, asthma, heart failure, dehydration, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, gout, renal or hepatic impairment, surgery, SLE, thyrotoxicosis, hypothyroidism, inflammatory bowel disease, head injury, gall bladder disease, prostatic hypertrophy, adrenocortical insufficiency, hypotension, shock, myasthenia gravis, phaeochromocytoma, GI lesions. Pregnancy (avoid in last trimester unless under medical supervision), labour, lactation.

Interactions :

MAOIs, CNS depressants, anticoagulants, corticosteroids, diuretics, hypoglycaemics, NSAIDs, uricosurics, methotrexate, mifepristone, vancomycin, urine tests, antibiotics, cyclizine, mexiletine, metoclopramide, domperidone, cimetidine, anticholinergics, loperamide, kaolin, antihypertensives, neuromuscular blocking agents.

Adverse Reactions :

Allergic reactions, GI bleeding, GI upset, anaemia, CNS effects, bradycardia, palpitations, hypotension, confusion, blurred vision, tinnitus, genito-urinary effects, withdrawal reactions.
