Drug Class Description :

Barbiturates.

Generic Name :

Amobarbital [amylobarbitone]

Drug description :

White tablets coded T37.

Presentation :

Tablets, amobarbital (amylobarbitone) 50mg .

Indications :

Short term treatment of severe, intractable insomnia, in patients habituated to barbiturates.

Adult Dosage :

100 - 200 mg at bedtime.

Child Dosage :

Not recommended.

Contra Indications :

Uncontrolled pain, young adults, the elderly and debilitated, pregnancy, lactation, patients with a history of alcohol or drug abuse, acute intermittent porphyria.

Special Precautions :

Liver disorders, renal impairment, severe pulmonary insufficiency. Tolerance and dependence may develop.

Interactions :

Coumarin-type anticoagulants. Alcohol and other CNS depressants. Systemic steroids (including oral contraceptives). Griseofulvin, rifampicin, phenytoin, metronidazole and chloramphenicol.

Adverse Reactions :

Hangover with drowsiness, dizziness, ataxia, respiratory depression, hypersensitivity reactions, headache, paradoxical excitement and confusion.
