Drug Class Description :

Anticholinergics.

Generic Name :

Biperiden

Drug description :

Akineton: white quarter scored tablet with Knoll logo. Akineton Injection: 5 mg per mL; ampoules.

Presentation :

Akineton: Biperiden hydrochloride 2 mg . Akineton Injection: Biperiden lactate 5mg .

Indications :

Drug-induced extrapyramidal Drug-induced extrapyramidal symptoms and all other types of parkinsonism.

Adult Dosage :

Akineton: Initially 1 mg twice daily gradually increasing to 2 mg three times daily, followed by further increase then gradual reduction. Akineton Injection: 2 .5 - 5 mg as a single dose to maximum of 20 mg daily by intramuscular or slow intravenous injection.

Child Dosage :

Not recommended.

Contra Indications :

Untreated narrow angle glaucoma, GI obstruction, tardive dyskinesias (except where associated with neuroleptic drugs or Parkinsonian symptoms). Lactation.

Special Precautions :

Convulsions, cardiac arrhythmias, recent MI, urinary obstruction. Pregnancy. Elderly. Withdraw gradually.

Interactions :

Other anticholinergic psychotropic and antiparkinsonian drugs, antihistamines, CNS depressants, quinidine, metoclopramide.

Adverse Reactions :

Anticholinergic effects, confusion, agitation, rash.
