ACHROMYCIN (infections) overview
A broad-sprectrum antibiotic used for the treatment of infections caused by tetracycline-sensitive organisms. For example, Achromycin is highly effective in the treatment of effective in the treatment of infections caused by Borrellia recurrentis (relapsing fever), Calymmatobacterium granulomatis (granuloma inguinale), Chlamydia species (psittacosis, lymphogranuloma venereum, trachoma, inclusion conjunctivitis), Francisella tularensis (tularaemia), Haemophilus ducreyi (chancroid), Leptospira (meningitis, jaundice) , Mycoplasma pneumoniae (non- gonococcal urethritis), Pseudomonas mallei and pseudomallei (glanders and meliodosis), Rickettsiae (typhus fever, Q fever, rocky mountain spotted fever), Vibrio species (cholera). It is also effective, alone or in combination with streptomycin, in the treatment of infections due to Brucella species (brucellosis), and Yersinia pestis (bubonic plague) . Severe acne vulgaris. Other sensitive organisms include: Actinomyces israelii, Bacillus anthracis (pneumonia), Clostridium species (gas gangrene, tetanus), Entamoeba hystolytica (dysentery), Neisseria gonorrhoeae, and anaerobic species, Treponema pallidum and pertenue (syphilis and yaws).

Orange capsule coded LEDERLE 4874.

Presentation :

Capsules, tetracycline hydrochloride 250 mg .

Indications :

Adult Dosage :

250 - 500 mg four times daily, one hour before of two hours after meals.

Child Dosage :

Under 12 years, not recommended; over 12 years, 25 - 50 mg/kg in 2 - 4 equal doses. Maximum should not exceed adult dosage. Administration as for adults.

Contra Indications :

Pregnancy, lactation. SLE.

Special Precautions :

Renal or hepatic impairment. Caution in elderly.

Interactions :

Milk, antacids, mineral supplements, oral contraceptives, penicillins, anticoagulants.

Adverse Reactions :

GI disturbances, allergic reactions, superinfections. Intracranial hypertension (withdraw).
