Drug Class Description :

Vitamin D analogues (vitamins).

Generic Name :

Alfacalcidol

Drug description :

0.25 microgram pink capsule; 1 microgram orange capsule. Both marked with strength.

Presentation :

Capsules, alfacalcidol 0.25 microgram , 1 microgram .

Indications :

Renal osteodystrophy. Hypoparathyroidism. Hyperparathyroidism (with bone disease). Nutritional, malabsorptive and vitamin D resistant rickets and osteomalacia.

Adult Dosage :

Initially 1 microgram daily adjusted according to response; see data sheet.

Child Dosage :

Under 20 kg, not recommended; over 20 kg, initially 1 microgram daily adjusted according to response; see data sheet.

Elderly Dosage :

Initially 0 .5 microgram daily adjusted according to response; see data sheet.

Special Precautions :

Monitor plasma calcium regularly. Renal failure. Pregnancy, lactation.

Interactions :

Barbiturates, anticonvulsants, danazol, digitalis, thiazides, antacids, mineral oils, colestyramine (cholestyramine), colestipol, sucralfate.
