Drug description :

Tablets.

Presentation :

Tablets, bromocriptine (as mesylate) 2.5 mg . Available from Hillcross, Norton.

Indications :

Prevention or suppression of puerperal lactation for medical reasons. Hyperprolactinaemia. Cyclical benign breast disease, pronounced mastalgia.

Adult Dosage :

Prevention of lactation: initially 2 .5 mg on day of delivery, then 2.5 mg twice daily with meals for 14 days.

Suppression of lactation: initially 2 .5 mg on first day increasing after two to three days to 2.5 mg twice daily with meals for 14 days.

Hyperprolactinaemia: initially 1 - 1.25 mg at night. Titrate gradually at 2 to 3 day intervals to 7 .5 mg daily in divided doses with meals; max. 30 mg daily. Benign breast disease, mastalgia, initially, 1 - 1.25 mg at night. Titrate gradually to 2.5 mg twice daily with meals.

Contra Indications :

Toxaemia of pregnancy, puerperal and postpartum hypertension. and postpartum hypertension. Hypersensitivity to ergot alkaloids.

Special Precautions :

History of psychotic or severe cardiovascular disorders. Monitor BP, if hypertension, severe headache or signs of CNS toxicity develop withdraw immediately.

May induce ovulation; nonhormonal contraceptive measures should be taken if patient does not wish to conceive. Withdraw if conception occurs. Perform regular gynaecological assessment. Consider discontinuation in patients with unexplained pleuro- pulmonary signs or symptoms.

Interactions :

Alcohol, erythromycin, metoclopramide, drugs affecting BP.

Adverse Reactions :

Nausea, postural hypotension, dizziness, headache, vomiting, constipation, digital vasospasm, drowsiness, confusion, psychomotor excitation, hallucinations, dyskinesia, dry mouth, leg cramps. Retroperitoneal fibrosis on long term therapy (discontinue if occurs).
