Management of Cystic Fibrosis

Nutritional Support

Nutritional support is a good example of the necessity for a team approach to the management of CF. Malnutrition that occurs from the dysfunction of the digestive tract not only affects the ability of the patient to thrive, but can affect other body conditions such as lung function and immunity. Height and weight measurements are conducted on a regular basis. The primary goals of nutritional support are to:

  • Maintain normal growth and development throughout childhood
  • Maximize energy intake from food

Pancreatic-insufficient patients will require supplements with pancreatic enzymes and fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K.

Enteral feeding may be administered for children who have unsatisfactory nutritional status despite nutritional intervention and supplementation of the regular diet.28
