Disease Background

Stigma of Hepatitis C

The fear of being stigmatised may stop some people from seeking help, or discussing the issue of infection or treatment with friends and family. Furthermore, some people may not wish to admit to activities likely to have resulted in infection even when directly questioned, and many simply cannot determine how they were infected. (Conry-Cantilena et al, 1996)

As a result, it is important to acknowledge the patient’s concerns and fears about the disease, but at the same time suggest that the patient focus on eradicating the virus or delaying the progression of liver disease, rather than waste energy on fears about the stigma or on trying to find out how they got the disease.
