Opioid use in patients with cognitive impairment

Opioid use in patients with cognitive impairment

Patients suffering from dementia or other psychiatric disorders who require pain relief should be managed by a multidisciplinary team, which might include a physician, nurse, pharmacist and care worker.  Pain medications should be initiated by a physician who has specialist knowledge and expertise in pain management. Opioids can sometimes cause further impairment in cognitive function, although this is a warning sign that doses have not been appropriately titrated.
