Post MI Heart Failure

Impact

Heart failure (HF) is the end-stage of all heart diseases and is a major cause of morbidity and mortality.1 The prognosis has improved in the past decade, but 4-year mortality is still estimated to be around 50%.1

This section explores the impact of HF on patients, on healthcare systems, and on society as a whole.

Note. This section focuses on HF in general because there is a paucity of data on the impact of post-MI HF. In the UK, it has been estimated recently that between 20% and 50% of HF cases have an ischaemic origin.2
